ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team announced Tuesday (Sept. 20) its schedule for the 2022-23 season with 14 regular-season dual meets and a pair of first-semester tournaments. In addition to its six regular-season home contests, the Wolverines will host the 2023 Big Ten Championships on March 4-5 at Crisler Center. U-M is the defending Big Ten champion.
The Wolverines will wrestle five teams that finished in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships a season ago, including Penn State and Iowa, who along with U-M, made up the top-three NCAA finishers in 2022.
U-M will open its dual-meet schedule at Campbell and North Carolina on Friday and Sunday, Nov. 13-15, and face non-conference duals against Columbia (Nov. 20), Cal Poly (Jan. 6) and CSU Bakersfield (Jan. 8) before rounding out the non-conference schedule and the dual-meet slate at home against Central Michigan on Feb. 19. The Wolverines also resume their annual appearances at the kickoff MSU Open (Nov. 5) and Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 2-3). It will be U-M's 40th appearance at the CKLV event.
The Wolverines will travel to rival Michigan State for their Big Ten Conference opener on Friday, Jan. 13, in East Lansing, Mich., before hosting Wisconsin (Jan. 15), Ohio State (Jan. 27), Maryland (Jan. 29) and Indiana (Feb. 12). Michigan's other road Big Ten duals include Penn State (Jan. 20), Rutgers (Jan. 22) and Iowa (Feb. 10).
Michigan, the defending conference champion, will host the 2023 Big Ten Championships, March 4-5, at Crisler Center, before the season wraps up with the NCAA Championships two weeks later (March 16-18) at BOK Arena in Tulsa, Okla. U-M hosts the Big Ten tournament for the 10th time in program history and first time since 2010.
Michigan is coming off one of the most successful seasons in the 100-year history of the program. U-M posted a 12-1 dual record, captured the Big Ten title for the first time since 1973 and claimed second place at the NCAA Championships. Nick Suriano claimed the 125-pound NCAA title, while U-M tied a program record with six total All-Americans. Myles Amine, who also earned Co-Wrestler of the Big Ten Championships, became the first ever five-time NCAA placewinner with a runner-up finish at 184 pounds, and head coach Sean Bormet was named both the NWCA National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year.
