U-M Opens Season with Strong Start at Michigan Open

DEXTER, Mich. -- The University Michigan men's cross country team opened its season with a five-kilometer race at the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Michigan on Friday morning (Sept. 2).
The Wolverines raced against the Detroit-Mercy Titans and finished with the top five racers all running for the Maize and Blue.
Graduate Student Arjun Jha was the fastest on the day running a 15:06 at a 3:01 K pace. Jha transferred in from Indiana and will look to continue this hot start for the Wolverines across the season. At the first mile, he was close to the front of the pack but stormed away in the last mile to finish 11 seconds faster than, junior Oli Raimond (15:17.9). Â To round out the top three was another junior, Zach Stewart who ran a 15:18.3.
The next members of the Maize and Blue to finish were senior and last-year's winner Nick Foster (15.19.5) and fifth-year Colton Yesney (15:20.0). All the Wolverines competing for the team or running unattached finished below 16:10.0.
Jha's time is among the fastest ever run at the Michigan Open. He was only a few seconds behind the 15:01.4 set by professional Craig Huffer in 2019.
Over the course of the meet, the men stayed tight together, but then they let go for the final kilometer.
The Wolverines race again next Friday, Sept. 9, at the Big Ten Preview in Ann Arbor at the U-M Golf Course in preparation for the Big Ten Championships, which also be hosted at the U-M Golf Course on Oct. 28.Â
