WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used a fourth-quarter surge, scoring two goals over the last eight minutes of the game, to defeat No. 20 Wake Forest 3-1 for its first win of the 2022 season.
Michigan struck quickly in the contest and largely controlled play but for the second quarter, when Wake notched its goal six minutes before halftime. Sophomore Abby Tamer scored twice, upping her season total to three goals already on the season, while sophomore Alana Richardson tallied the game-winning marker at the 52:08 mark.
Tamer and Richardson both scored on fourth-quarter breakaways. Richardson netted the go-ahead goal after a long run all alone from midfield, pulling the Demon Deacon goalkeeper out of the cage and beating her to the right side. Tamer added insurance less than four minutes later, at 55:41, running past a Wake defender at the 25 before burying reverse shot to the right side of the cage.
Tamer, who also netted U-M's goal against UNC on Friday (Aug. 26), opened scoring at the 4:05 mark on the first penalty corner of the game. Junior Anouk Veen drove a hard strike to the right post, where Tamer tipped it in past the Wake goalkeeper.
The Demon Deacons scored the equalizer with Michigan down a player at 24:05 in the second quarter, driving it into the circle from the right side and getting a stick on it to flip it high over fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker.
Michigan outshot the the Demon Deacons 12-8, while penalty corners were even at 3-3. Spieker and sophomore/freshman Caylie McMahon played a half apiece for the second straight game and combined for three saves, while Wake's Ellie Todd stopped five of eight U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines will kick off the home portion of their 2022 slate against in-state foe Central Michigan next Sunday (Sept. 4) at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free for all regular-season home games.
