ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three University of Michigan student-athletes -- Myles Amine (wrestling, first team), Matty Beniers (ice hockey, third team) and Paul Juda (men's gymnastics, third team) -- were named to the 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large teams, announced Tuesday (June 14) by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The three selections ties Michigan's most the men's at-large category in an academic year (2015).
At-large sports for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as beach volleyball, bowling, field hockey, and rowing for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.
The 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Women's At-Large teams will be announced Wednesday (June 15).
Amine was previously named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team last season and is the third Michigan wrestler in program history to earn Academic All-America recognition, along with Eric Tannenbaum (2006, '07, '08) and Adam Coon (2018). Also a five-time Academic All-Big Ten and NWCA Scholar Award recipient, Amine graduated with his master's degree in sport management this spring after previously earning a bachelor's in business administration.
Amine was the NCAA runner-up at 184 pounds in 2022 and became the first ever five-time placewinner and All-American at the NCAA Championships, adding to previous top-four finishes at 174 and 197 pounds. He captured the 184-pound crown at the Big Ten Championships, all but clinching U-M's first conference team title since 1973, and was named Co-Wrestler of the Championships. A two-time Big Ten champion, he finished his collegiate career with a 125-23 record, including a 21-2 mark this season. Internationally, Amine captured Olympic bronze at 86kg/189 pounds last August in Tokyo and, less than two weeks after the end of the collegiate season, he claimed his first European championship in Budapest.
Beniers, a sports management major, garners CoSIDA Academic All-America for the first time in his career and is the Michigan's fourth ice hockey player to earn to do so, joining Jeff Jillson (2002) Zach Hyman (2015) and Straus Mann (2020, '21).
A first team All-American and the Big Ten scoring champion, Beniers was a finalist for the Big Ten Player of the Year award and a unanimous All-Big Ten first team selection. He was an alternate captain for the Wolverines in 2020-21 and helped guide the team to the Big Ten Tournament championship and the Frozen Four. A point-per-game player, Beniers recorded 67 points in 61 career games. Michigan's Rookie of the Year last season, he was the second overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, and following the close of the 2021-22 season, he began his NHL career on a five-game point streak, second to just Wayne Gretzky, and had nine points in 10 games.
A psychology major, Juda is a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the first time in his career and becomes just the second representative of the Michigan men's gymnastics team to earn the prestigious honor, joining Justin Toman (2002).
Juda won a pair of titles at the 2022 NCAA Championships, taking the all-around win with an 85.298 and scored a 15.000 on vault en route to tying Sam Mikulak's modern-era school record of six All-America honors. He also earned top-four finishes on high bar (second, 14.566) and parallel bars (fourth, 14.366) and placed eighth on both floor exercise and still rings. His all-around title was Michigan's since the 2014 season (Mikulak), while his vault title was the program's first overall event crown since Anthony McCallum in 2019 (vault). Juda was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Championships after claiming a Big Ten high bar title and first team All-Big Ten honors. He is a current member of the United States Senior National Team.
Michigan now has had seven student-athletes earn Academic All-America honors during the 2021-22 academic year. Aidan Hutchinson (football, first team), David Ojabo (football, second team), Andrew Vastardis (football, second team) and Marc Ybarra (men's soccer, third team) all earned the recognition following the fall season.
