
Michigan Rolls Past Brown and Princeton, Stays Perfect in Conference Play

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team defeated No. 22 Brown, 11-6, and No. 21 Princeton, 16-6, Saturday (April 9) in CWPA action at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
Michigan (22-8, 10-0 CWPA) will close out the regular season Sunday (April 10) against Harvard (noon) and Saint Francis (3 p.m.).
Game 1: #7 Michigan 11, #22 Brown 6
In the first game of the day, Michigan defeated Brown 11-6 with Sofie Pontré and Maddie O'Reilly leading the charge with three goals apiece.
Pontré got Michigan rolling by netting the first goal of the game just 22 seconds into the first quarter. Brown evened it up for the only tie of the game with 6:15 left in the first. Maddy Steere and Ashley O'Neill both found the back of the net to end the first quarter for Michigan.
In the second quarter, Pontré scored twice, giving her a single-game career high of three. Also scoring in the second was Erin Neustrom. Brown stormed back with two goals of its own to pull within three goals, 6-3, heading into the third quarter.
In the third, Michigan pulled to a four-goal lead after Kayla Barone, O'Reilly and Neustrom all found the back of the net.
Defense was the name of the game in the final quarter as there was only one goal scored the entire quarter. O'Reilly was the lone goal scorer for either team, earning a hat trick.
Ava Morrant led the team in assists with three, and Alex Brown was a force between the pipes, collecting 11 saves and allowing only two goals.
Game 2: #7 Michigan 16, #21 Princeton 6
In the second game, Michigan defeated Princeton 16-6 after a stellar second half in which the Wolverines scored nine goals. Steere led all players with four goals, U-M ended the game with 18 steals, and Brown collected two penalty saves in goal.
In the first quarter, O'Reilly scored back-to-back goals to put Michigan up 2-0 over the Tigers. Neustrom and Steere got in on the action, chipping a goal apiece for a 4-2 lead at the end of the quarter.
O'Reilly started the second quarter exactly how she started the first and chipped in her third goal of the game. Barone and Steere each found the back of the net as well, and U-M went into the break up 7-4.
In the third quarter, Michigan went on a 5-1 run with Neustrom, Elise Walker and Ciruli each finding the back of the net. Morrant hit back-to-back shots to give Michigan a 12-5 lead over the Tigers heading into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, Morrant and Steere earned hat tricks and Sammi Monroe chipped in the final goal for the Wolverines.
