
Groumi's School Record in 200 IM Paces Wolverines on Second Day of NCAAs

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team is sitting in 17th place at the NCAA Championships after a school-record performance by Gal Groumi, who broke the Michigan mark in the 200-yard individual medley on the second day of competition Thursday (March 24) at McAuley Aquatic Center.
Swimming in the B final, Groumi led early in the first two legs of the 200 IM but fell off in the breaststroke leg. In the freestyle leg, Groumi fought back for third in his race and an 11th-place finish overall with a time of 1:41.09. He broke by five-hundredths of a second the eight-year-old Michigan school record set by Kyle Whitaker in 2014.
The quartet of Bence Szabados, Cam Peel, Groumi and Will Chan raced to a third-place finish in heat two and 15th place overall in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:16.38.
In the prelims, Patrick Callan and Jake Mitchell started off day two of the NCAA Championships for the Wolverines in the 500-yard freestyle. Callan swam a 4:16.44 to finish 28th, and Mitchell was 46th with a time of 4:21.24.
In the 200 IM, Groumi swam his way into the B final with a time of 1:41.38 to finish 11th in the prelims. Jared Daigle placed 29th with a time of 1:43.70.
Ross Todd battled through six dives and finished 31st with a score of 300.75 on the one-meter springboard.
Competition will resume Friday (March 25) at 10 a.m. with prelims in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and three-meter diving. Finals in those events plus the 400-yard medley relay will start at 6 p.m.
