ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team (8-4, 2-0 B1G) embarks on a five-match road swing beginning this weekend, heading to Minnesota and Wisconsin (10-6, 2-1 B1G) for a pair of matches. U-M will face the Gophers on Friday (March 25) at 3:30 p.m. CT and the Badgers on Sunday (March 27) at noon CT.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan (8-4, 2-0 B1G) has won three straight matches following a 4-0 shutout win over Purdue (March 20). U-M has only yielded three points over the last three matches, outscoring its opponents 13-3 over the span.
• U-M is one of four unbeaten teams in Big Ten action at 2-0, joining Maryland (1-0), Ohio State (2-0) and Northwestern (2-0).
• Michigan has three ranked singles players in the latest ITA rankings in No. 11 Kari Miller, No. 73 Jaedan Brown and No. 102 Nicole Hammond. Brown and Andrea Cerdan team up to form the No. 74-ranked doubles duo. Michigan is in at No. 26 as a team following its win over Purdue (March 20).
• Nicole Hammond is riding a seven-match winning streak after a straight-set win over Purdue at No. 2 as the only Wolverine to finish all 12 singles matches in dual-match play. She and Jaedan Brown are tied for the team lead with nine dual-match wins. Michigan is 47-18 in singles action during dual matches, good for a .723 winning percentage.
• U-M has won both doubles points in Big Ten action, securing both points by winning the matches at No. 1 and No. 3. Jaedan Brown and Andrea Cerdan are 2-0 at No. 1 in conference play, with Merri Kelly and Kari Miller combining for a 2-0 record at No. 3 as Michigan has not dropped a Big Ten doubles match.
• Michigan won its third match without the doubles point in a 5-2 win over Columbia (March 13), winning the final five singles matches on court to erase a 2-0 deficit. U-M is 5-0 when securing the match's first point and 3-4 without it.
• The Wolverines did not play either Wisconsin or Minnesota last season. UW had players participate at the Michigan Invitational to begin the season in January but neither team was on U-M's Big Ten schedule.
• Michigan and Minnesota (12-5, 1-3 B1G) have not faced each other since a 7-0 U-M win in Ann Arbor on March 24, 2019. It is Michigan's first trip to Minnesota since capturing the 2017 Big Ten Tournament title with a 4-3 win over Northwestern in the championship match. Minnesota dropped both matches last weekend against Illinois and Northwestern after getting a 6-1 win over Iowa to account for its conference win. The Wolverines are 33-15 all-time against the Gophers.
• U-M and Wisconsin (10-6, 2-1 B1G) are meeting up for the first time since a 4-0 non-conference win for the Wolverines at the 2018 ITA National Indoor Championship. The teams have not squared off as conference opponents since another 4-0 U-M win in Ann Arbor on March 31, 2017. The Badgers split a pair of matches last weekend against Northwestern and Illinois Michigan is 31-23 all-time against the Badgers.
• U-M is 139-7 (.952) in Big Ten regular-season play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to nine of the last 11 Big Ten championship titles awarded (no title awarded in 2020), as well as three tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• Michigan head coach Ronni Bernstein, who is in her 15th season in Ann Arbor, became Michigan's all-time winningest coach earlier this season. Bernstein is up to 293 victories at Michigan following a 1-0 weekend. In addition, Bernstein can become the first coach to win 300 matches at Michigan with seven more wins this season.
• U-M continues its swing away from the VTC next weekend, heading to Ohio State (April 1) and Penn State (April 3).
