
U-M Swimmers Show Improvement, Set Personal Bests at First Chance Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Select members of the Michigan men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the first day of action at the Michigan First Chance Meet on Saturday (Feb. 12) at Canham Natatorium across two sessions.
This meet gave 18 Wolverines (16 men, two women) the opportunity to achieve personal-best times. Six Wolverines set two career-best times, while junior Andrew Trepanier set three career bests.
In the morning session, the Wolverines had participants in four events and four time trials. The meet started for the Maize and Blue with the men's 500-yard Freestyle. Senior Patrick Callan led the way with a 4:19.12, while he and sophomore Juan Ceresa (4:22.86) were below the NCAA 'B' time. Two career bests also were set in the race with sophomore Yugo Tsukikawa (4:29.53) and freshman Jack Callan (4:28.20) both beating their previous marks.
The next event, the men's 200-yard individual medley, featured three Wolverines. Junior Jack McCurdy led the way with a 1:46.04, a NCAA 'B' time and the 11th-best time in the Big Ten this year. Fifth year senior Spencer Carl swam a career-best 1:47.81 in the event.
The final race for the Michigan men was the 50-yard freestyle which featured four Wolverine swimmers. Freshman Parker Nolan (20.68) and juniors Trepanier (20.17) and Noah Yarian (20.68) set career bests, while junior River Wright finished second (20.53).
The women's team had a small contingent at the meet as the Wolverines prepare for the Big Ten Championships next week in Madison, Wis. Freshman Abbey Ketslakh competed in the 50-yard freestyle and was just off her personal best time, while junior Katii Tang raced in a 200-yard freestyle time trial and set a career-best 1:46.39.
The morning was ended by time trials, with three Wolverine men setting career bests. Sophomore Jake Mitchell set finished the 200-yard backstroke in 1:44.11, while freshman Brendan Fitzpatrick went 1:59:18 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Trepanier followed up with career-best 47.56 in the 100-yard butterfly.
In the evening, Michigan had 12 men swim across five events. The second session started with the 100-yard butterfly and Carl setting a career best at 47.58 seconds. Wenger and Tsukikawa competed next in the 400 IM and set career-best times -- 3:50.63 and 3:52.68, respectively. Wenger's time is an NCAA 'B' cut and the 11th best in the Big Ten this season.

In the 100-yard freestyle, McCurdy swam a 54.24 and Fitzpatrick swam a 53.48 to set new bests.
The last event of the day was the men's 100-yard backstroke, during which Trepanier set his third career best, a 48.68-second finish.
The First Chance Meet concludes Sunday (Feb. 13) at Canham Natatorium with two sessions. The first begins at 11 a.m., while the second sessions starts at 4 p.m.
