ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Eli Brooks recorded his 1,000th career point, and DeVante' Jones nearly posted a triple-double, but the University of Michigan men's basketball team fell 68-57 to No. 16 Ohio State on Saturday night (Feb. 12) at a sold-out Crisler Center.
After upsetting No. 3 Purdue just two days ago, the Wolverines found themselves playing their fourth game in eight days and struggled to see the ball go through the net in the second half, shooting 34 percent and finishing the game 4-for-17Â from long range. On the other end, the Buckeyes shot 50 percent and were 16-for-18 on free throws -- led by E.J. Liddell's 28 points.
Brooks scored 17 points helping him become the 56th Wolverine to reach 1,000 career points. He added four rebounds and five assists. Backcourt mate Jones, who made his 100th collegiate start, closed the game with a near triple-double posting eight points, 10 rebounds and eight assists -- giving him 18 assists over his last two games. Sophomore Hunter Dickinson posted his 19th double-figure game of the season with 14 points and seven rebounds.
In a raucous Crisler Center, the energy could be felt early, as Michigan and Ohio State (15-6, 8-4 Big Ten) were revved up, but combined to start 0-for-5 before a Brooks layup opened the games scoring. A pair of Moussa Diabate dunks gave the Maize and Blue an early 6-4 advantage. It was short lived after OSU's Jamari Wheeler's five points in the next two minutes helped OSU move ahead 11-10, as Brooks and Dickinson went 1-for-6 for U-M over the first eight minutes.
A three-point play by Liddell and another bucket from Cedric Russell pushed OSU's advantage to three, 19-16, before Dickinson and Diabate battled down low for lay-ins and Brooks drained a triple to tie the game at 23 at the under-four-minute media timeout. It was back-and-forth action to wind down the half, but the Buckeyes take a 33-30 lead into halftime.
In mirror images of each other, U-M went 14-for-29 with two three-pointers, while OSU was 14-for-28 with two triples of its own during the first 20 minutes. The Wolverines did not attempt a free throw, but the Buckeyes were 3-for-3, accounting for the game's point difference.
The Buckeyes extended their lead, opening the second half with a four-point spurt and led 41-34 early, while U-M's cold shooting continued, opening 1-for-7 from the field. OSU continued to manufacture points, going 5-for-8 to start the second half, and U-M found itself trailing by 10, 46-36, as the Wolverines started 0-for-5 from long range.
Ohio State led 48-40 with 9:51 on the clock, but U-M went scoreless for nearly four minutes. After the drought ended, the Wolverines slowly chipped away at the deficit. Taking advantage of missed OSU shots, U-M drew within five, but a Liddell triple pushed its lead back to eight, 55-47, with four minutes left.
Out of the media timeout, Brooks drained a three, but with the Buckeyes in the bonus, a pair of free throws and a layup helped OSU maintain its nine-point lead, 61-52. The Wolverines were forced to foul, and the Ohio State went on to victory.
The Wolverines get a few days of rest before heading out for back-to-back road games, first visiting Iowa in Iowa City on Thursday (Feb. 17) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST, with the game to be broadcast live on ESPN.
