COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Fifth-year senior Kathryn Peterson converted on two second-half penalty strokes to lead the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 3 Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon (Nov. 4) at Ohio State's Buckeye Varsity Field.
With the win, Michigan advances to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the third straight year -- and 16th time in 25 seasons. The Wolverines, who are seeking their eighth tournament title in program history, will face No. 4 Northwestern, which defeated Maryland, 2-1, in today's other semifinal game, at noon on Sunday (Nov. 6), live on the Big Ten Network.
Both of Peterson's goals -- coming early in both the third and fourth quarters at 32:03 and 46:50 -- followed successful Michigan video referrals in the PSU circle. U-M earned a corner on the first; the initial shot banged off the goalkeeper to junior Lora Clarke, who lifted the rebound chance into the body of a Nittany Lion defender on the goal line to earn the stroke. Peterson buried it to the right side.
Clarke was again on the PSU doorstep to earn the second stroke, crashing down on a loose ball in front when a Nittany Lion defender intentionally used her back stick to swipe it away. Clarke requested the referral looking for a penalty corner and got a stroke called instead. Peterson again converted in with an almost identical shot to the right. The goals were U-M's first off the stroke this season, while Peterson upped her season goal total to four.
Similar to Michigan's last meeting against PSU, which U-M dropped 2-1 despite outshooting the Nittany Lions, 23-3, it again posted significant statistical advantages today, outshooting them, 16-9, and outcornering them, 8-3.
Penn State spoiled the shutout late in the fourth quarter with a reverse chip at the 57:18 mark. PSU regrouped after banging a corner shot off the left post, attacked the U-M circle again from the left side, and Sophia Gladieux lifted a high cross-cage shot to the top right corner.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned four saves, while Penn State's Brie Barraco stopped seven of nine U-M shots on goal.
