BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Despite double-figure scoring efforts from Hunter Dickinson and Jett Howard, the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to Arizona State, 87-62, on Thursday (Nov. 17) in the Legends Classic championship game at Barclays Center.
SUMMARY: After falling behind early, Michigan (3-1) struggled to slow down Arizona State (4-1) all night. Dickinson and Howard's double-figure efforts were not enough as the Sun Devils held a lead throughout the contest and the Wolverines dropped their first game of the season. Â
FIRST HALF: The Wolverines started the game cold, going 2-for-8 from the field in the opening minutes and allowing Arizona State to jump out to an early 15-5 lead. Michigan had difficulty keeping up with the Sun Devil offense, which made seven straight field goals midway through the half for a 19-point lead. Layups from Dickinson, Howard and Dug McDaniel gave the Wolverines some life, sparking a 6-0 run and bringing the score to 34-19 with four minutes before the break. The offensive rhythm was cut short, however, as ASU answered with a 12-4 run. A Dickinson and-one and a buzzer-beating layup by Jaelin Llewellyn brought the Wolverines closer in the closing minutes of the first half but the Maize and Blue trailed at halftime, 46-28.
SECOND HALF: Michigan had success attacking the paint early in the second half, with layups from Dickinson and an and-one from Kobe Bufkin. Unfortunately for the Maize and Blue, Arizona State went on a 19-6 scoring run over the next seven minutes -- which included 10 points from Sun Devil Desmond Cambridge Jr. -- and the Michigan deficit was stretched to 71-43 before a step-back jumper from Terrance Williams II ended U-M's scoring drought. McDaniel's first career three-pointer, a Tarris Reed Jr. hook shot and Youssef Khayat's first career points highlighted the final minutes for Michigan, but ASU's lead was insurmountable and the Wolverines picked up their first loss of the season as they fell to Arizona State, 87-62.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Wolverines will kick off a three-game home stand on Sunday (Nov. 20) at Crisler Center when Michigan hosts Ohio. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
