
Wolverine Women Finish Strong, Place 21st at Nuttycombe

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team finished strong taking the 21st spot at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Friday (Oct. 14).
Fifth year Kayla Windemuller finished in 68th place and was the Wolverines' fastest runner throughout the race. Through the 2000 meters, Windemuller was in 31st place, but fell off the pace. Windemuller was able to hold her own though and finished with a time of 20:37.8 -- a season best.
The next finisher for the Maize and Blue was junior Sam Tran who finished in 87th. Tran started out near the back of the pack in 127th through a third of the race. Tran was able to pass 40 racers over the next 4,000 meters to finish with a time 20:49.0, another season best.
The Maize and Blue's other top finishers were senior Samantha Saenz (20:54.5), graduate student Danielle Page (21:06.4) and sophomore Samantha Hastie (21:16.1). Saenz finished in 98th place and set a new career-best time beating her old time by 14 seconds. Hastie also ran a career-best time and finished in 156th place.
Through the 2000 meters, the top 85 competitors were separated by four seconds or less with the gap widening to 18 seconds 4,000 meters into the race.
Three women ran in the "B" race today, highlighted by two career-best times. Sophomore Gabby Swider finished 58th with a time of 22:09.5 and sophomore Lauren Fulcher finished 105th at 23:01.0. Michigan also had sophomore Lucy Petee in the race who finished in 81st with a time of 22:29.7.
A small group of Michigan runners will compete on Friday, Oct. 21, at the EMU Fall Classic in Dexter Mich., before the full team is back in action for the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 28 at U-M Golf Course.
