JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- With a second straight career-best performance from senior Pier Francesco De Col and two Wolverines among the top 20, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted an 880 team total today (Tuesday, Oct. 11) to finish fifth at the Georgetown Intercollegiate held at the Liberty National Golf Club. The Wolverines have recorded top-five finishes in all three fall events.
"There were a lot of great things to build on this week but unfortunately a couple of untimely stretches cost us a really good finish," said U-M head coach Zach Barlow. "We still need to have to use these experiences to get better. It was another tournament where coming down the stretch, we had a chance to win and as a coach of a young team, it shows potential. Now our job is to take that potential and make it into reality. It's the next step in this program's progression."
With De Col posted back-to-back career-low tying 70s (-2) in Monday's 36-hole day and junior Will Anderson adding a third (70, -2), the Maize and Blue posted team tallies of 287 (-1) and 297 to position itself fourth with a 583 first day total. Using a 73 (+1) from sophomore Bavake Sihota to pace the final round, U-M closed with a 296 to post an 880 54-hole total on the board and record its third straight top-five team finish of the fall season.
For the second time in his career -- and first since his freshman year, De Col paced the Wolverines tying for fifth with a career-low 215 (-1) event tally -- his first career sub-par tournament total. It marked the second straight event he has posted a career-low single-round tally (70, -2; twice) and a new career-low 54-hole event total. Additionally, his tie for fifth marked his first career top-10, as well as top-five finish of his career. His previous best was a tie for 15th as a freshman (2020 Desert Mountain Intercollegiate).
"Fran has been a stabilizer in the lineup," said Barlow. "Everyone trusts him including myself and Matt (Hoffman). He's been someone you can trust to go out and play a good round even without his best stuff daily. He has taken his game to the next level and hopefully, that inspires others around him to do the same. He played golf yesterday like I haven't seen in a long time. I was very impressed. Looking for him to build on this week and be ready to roll again next week with a quick turnaround."
Anderson's tie for 18th with his 222 (70-78-74) helped him tie for 18th not only giving his three straight top 20 individual fall finishes, but helping the Wolverines have at least two golfers among the top 20 in all three events. Sophomore Hunter Thomson rounded out U-M's top three with his tie for 28th (224).
Returning to Ann Arbor, the Wolverines will have a few days of prep before heading back out for their fall finale at the Little Rock Invitational. The 54-hole event will be held, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 17-18), at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock.
