COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed nine matches, earning bonus points in seven, to roll to a dominant 40-2 road win at Maryland on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 30) at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. It was the Wolverines' most team points in a dual since the 2017-18 season.
Fifth-year senior Jack Medley set the Wolverines' high pace in the first bout with a first-period fall against Zach Spence in 2:31. Medley scored five takedowns in the opening period, including three in the first 90 seconds, before earning a four count off a leg turk and transitioning it to a half for the pin -- his second of the season.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin was equally dominant at 133 pounds, cruising to a 16-1 technical fall in the second period against King Sandoval. Ragusin, ranked eighth nationally, scored three takedowns and 10 back points off a pair of four-point tilts in the first period and another for two in the second to end the bout in just 3:57.
Graduate student Stevan Micic, ranked fourth at 141 pounds, bounced back with a 16-3 major decision against Danny Bertoni behind four takedowns and six near-fall points. He scrambled into a four-point leg turk off a single-leg attack midway through the third and finished with 4:13 riding-time advantage.
Junior/sophomore Pat Nolan held on to earn a 10-8 decision over Michael North at 149 pounds with two takedowns in the first period and two reversals in the second. North evened the score on the board with a takedown in the last 10 seconds of the third, but Nolan had 1:28 of riding-time advantage and added a late escape. It was Nolan's first dual win at 149 pounds this season; he previously earned a decision win last semester at Columbia at 141 pounds.
Senior/junior Will Lewan and junior/sophomore Cameron Amine bookended the intermission break with major decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Lewan, ranked 14th nationally, defeated Conner Decker 18-5 with six takedowns, a four-point leg turk in the first period and 5:03 riding-time advantage. Amine, ranked 12th at 165 pounds, similarly cruised to a 16-3 win over Gaven Bell with five takedowns, a four-point turk in the third and 5:31 in riding time.
Graduate student Logan Massa earned a forfeit win at 174 pounds before fellow graduate student Myles Amine, ranked second, claimed the dual's marquee match with a 6-2 decision over 11th-ranked Kyle Cochran at 184 pounds. Amine finished on two takedowns in the first period -- a low single off the opening whistle and another out of a scramble late in the frame. Amine could not quite finish out of two more scrambles late in the second and third periods.
Maryland (5-9, 0-5 Big Ten) picked up its win with an 11-9 overtime decision at 197 pounds but lost a team point afterward for control of the mat area. Senior heavyweight Mason Parris slammed the door in the final match, rolling to a 21-4 technical fall over Zach Schrader with six takedowns -- four in the first period -- and two four-point turns off a leg turk to end the match in 4:56. It was Parris' eighth bonus win in 11 total matches on the season.
Michigan (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten) will return to the road next Friday (Feb. 4) when it travels to Lincoln to face Nebraska at 8 p.m. CST at the Devaney Center. The dual will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
