COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team struggled out of the gate and never recovered Friday (Jan. 28), falling to No. 12 Ohio State 189-111 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Senior captains AJ Bornstein, Will Chan and Jared Daigle were the lone event winners on the afternoon. Bornstein took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:59.33), while Chan won the 100-yard breaststroke (53.56), and Daigle finished first in the 200-yard IM (1:48.27).
Though not winning their respective races, a number of Wolverines had career-best performances Friday evening. Freshman Niklas Eberly touched the wall in 48.30 in the 100-yard butterfly and 20.31 in the 50-yard freestyle for new career bests, while fellow rookie Brendan Fitzpatrick swam to two fourth-place finishes in the 100-yard (55.11) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.42). Meanwhile, sophomore Ansel Froass tallied three career-best times in the 100-yard (55.75) and 200-yard (2:01.60) breaststrokes and 200-yard IM (1:49.08)
Freshman Connor Hunt (9:07.29), sophomore Yugo Tsukikawa (9:31.06) and freshman Jack Callan (9:31.56) all excelled in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while Hunt also finished in a career-best 4:30.61 in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Jacque Wenger turned in career bests in the 100-yard (50.67) and 200-yard (1:48.92) backstroke, and rookie diver Cameron Gammage scored a career-best 358.28 points in the one-meter dive.
Michigan's next scheduled event is in two weeks when it hosts the First Chance Meet in Canham Natatorium, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12-13.
