Wolverines Bounce Back with Dominant Win over No. 14 Scarlet Knights

» No. 3 Michigan claimed eight matches, including three with bonus points, to defeat No. 14 Rutgers 32-8 and bounce back from its first loss of the season.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team bounced back from its first loss of the season in commanding fashion, claiming eight matches en route to a 32-8 win against No. 14 Rutgers in front of 2,195 fans Sunday afternoon (Jan. 23) at Crisler Center.
Graduate student Nick Suriano, ranked No. 1 nationally at 125 pounds, set the tone in the first match, rolling to a 16-1 technical fall against Dylan Shawver. Suriano, who became Rutgers' first NCAA champion in program history with the 133-pound title in 2019, scored takedowns in the first and second periods but blew the match open with a pair of four-point turns -- off a leg turk in the first period and a guillotine in the third. He tacked on a pair of stall points and earned the tech after riding time (3:03). Suriano improved to 5-0 on the season.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, ranked eighth nationally, used a first-period takedown to edge 20th-ranked Joseph Olivieri 3-1 at 133 pounds. Ragusin largely controlled the pace throughout, but his throw by the edge of the match with just two second remaining in the first period proved the only offensive points of the bout.
Rutgers (12-4, 2-4 Big Ten) claimed back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds, including a tech fall in the former, to even the team at 8-0, but then Michigan (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) won each of the final six bouts to surge away from the Scarlet Knights.
Senior/junior Will Lewan, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, scored three takedowns -- including two in the first period -- and accumulated 1:04 in riding-time advantage to defeat Al DeSantis 9-3 before the intermission break. Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine, ranked 10th, resumed action after the break with a 3-1 decision against Andrew Clark at 165 pounds, with a high-crotch takedown at the second-period buzzer.
Graduate student Logan Massa, ranked sixth at 174 pounds, secured his second pin of the season in the second period against Connor O'Neill. Massa built up a big early lead with three takedowns and two back points in the first period, then transitioned a claw-ride tilt to a half for the fall at 4:15. Graduate student Myles Amine, ranked second nationally, followed with another six-point victory off a forfeit at 184 pounds.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked eighth at 197 pounds, won the dual's marquee match, using a low single in sudden victory to edge sixth-ranked Greg Bulsak, 4-2. Both wrestlers had chances early; two quality scrambles produced no points in the first and second periods, before a Brucki reversal and second Bulsak escape evened the score and sent the bout to sudden victory. The Wolverine shot in on a low ankle quickly in the extra frame and earned the winning takedown just 30 seconds in.
Senior heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second, rounded out the dual with a 10-3 decision over Boone McDermott in the final bout. Parris scored three takedowns, including two in the first period, and added a quick reversal in the third and spent the bulk of the match looking for a turn -- settling instead for 3:52 in riding-time advantage.
Michigan will close out its homestand next Friday (Jan. 28) when it hosts Minnesota at 7 p.m. at Crisler Center. The dual will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, while tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
