MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 7-ranked Michigan men's swimming and diving team returned to action Saturday (Jan. 15) for the first time since the calendar flipped to 2022, taking home a pair of wins over Big Ten Conference foes Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Wolverines topped the Badgers 182-116 and beat Minnesota 188.5-110.5 at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
The host Badgers also defeated the Gophers 148-143.
Senior Jared Daigle set the standard for the Wolverines on the day, winning both the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.95) and 200-yard IM (1:46.85). The Waltham, Mass., native also took second place in the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Gal Groumi followed suit, winning both the 100-yard (47.69) and 200-yard (1:47.32) butterfly.
Joining Daigle as a winner was fellow senior Patrick Callan, who took first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:35.86). Junior Cam Peel won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.98 seconds, narrowly out-touching sophomore Bence Szabados (20.00). Szabados gave the Wolverines a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (44.32).
Freshman diver Cameron Gammage secured a victory for U-M in the three-meter dive, scoring a 360.75.
Michigan capped the day with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Szabados, Peel, Groumi and sophomore Jake Mitchell touched first in 2:55.90.
The Wolverines continue their road swing through Big Ten opponents in two weeks, traveling to Columbus to take on Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.
