DEXTER, Mich. -- Competing in its first home cross country meet in more than two years, the No. 26-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team busted the rust Friday afternoon (Sept. 3) in the intrasquad Michigan Open.
Running unattached to begin the year, Nick Foster led the way for the Wolverines in a victory, covering the five-kilometer (3.11-mile) Hudson Mills Metropark course in 15:08.2. He beat teammate Oli Raimond, also running unattached, to the line by a second.
Colton Yesney was the top Wolverine in uniform on the day, finishing in third with a 15:11.2 effort, followed just over a second later by three-time All-American Devin Meyrer in 15:12.5. Outdoor track and field All-American Christian Hubaker rounded out the top five in 15:16.9.
Foster's time is among the fastest ever run at the Michigan Open dating back to 2010, the first year the meet was held in Dexter. He was just off the 15:01.4 run by professional Craig Huffer at the 2019 edition of the meet.
The effort for the Wolverines was deliberately measured throughout the early stages of the race, before they were given the green light to race it out over the final kilometer.
The field was comprised entirely of in-uniform Michigan runners and other Wolverines who competed "unattached" to preserve their eligibility for a redshirt season.
