ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On a rainy Tuesday night (Sept. 21) at U-M Soccer Stadium, the University of Michigan men's soccer team was defeated 3-1 by Notre Dame in a midweek non-conference contest.
The injury-plagued Wolverines (3-4-1) tallied 14 shots on the night, with three reaching goal, while the Fighting Irish (3-3-1) put six shots on frame.
Junior Evan Rasmussen scored his first collegiate goal in the first half and Bryce Blevins added his second assist of the season on the goal. Junior Owen Finnerty made three saves in goal.
Notre Dame was the first to light up the scoreboard in the second minute of the match. The Wolverines quickly regrouped and tied it at 1 on a free kick that Blevins sent into a crowded box. Rasmussen jumped up from the scrum and headed a ball into the back of the net from eight yards out to knot the game in the fourth minute.
Michigan fired off back-to-back shots in the 17th minute as it continued to press offensively over the course of the opening half.
After a close offside call that negated a U-M goal, Notre Dame regained the lead on Jack Lynn's second goal of the match in the 43rd minute, sending Michigan into the locker room trailing 2-1 at halftime.
Senior Kevin Buca pressed for the tying goal in the 52nd minute when he created a chance for himself that went just wide of the right post, allowing Notre Dame to maintain its lead.
The Fighting Irish extended the lead to 3-1 when a quick cross found its way into the bottom third of the net in the 71st minute.
Michigan was unable to find any further goals, and fell on a soggy night at U-M Soccer Stadium.
U-M will be back in action Sunday (Sept. 26) at 4 p.m. when it welcomes Northwestern for a Big Ten contest at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match with the Wildcats will be the first-ever Power Five men's soccer contest featuring two Black head coaches. Fans can catch all the action streamed live on B1G+.
