ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The eighteenth-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team outshot Central Michigan 26-1 en route to a 1-0 victory Sunday (Aug. 29) at U-M Soccer Stadium. Michigan's 4-0 start is the best in the Jennifer Klein era, and the first 4-0 start overall since 2013.
U-M (4-0) had a handful of decent chances in the opening half of play, with two coming from junior Lily Farkas in the 25th and 32nd minutes. Each effort came from 25 yards out, with the first being tipped just over the crossbar and the latter being saved just outside the right post.
At the break, U-M held a 9-0 shot advantage and had four shots on goal. Central Michigan (0-3) did not attempt a shot in the first half.
Coming out of the break, U-M had four chances in the opening 10 minutes, highlighted by senior Nicki Hernandez hitting the left post at the top of the six-yard box.
Holding a 15-0 lead in the shot category, U-M found its breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Farkas, who was active all day, beat a defender and sent a ball into the danger zone. The ensuing service was headed home at the mouth of goal by Hernandez for her team-best third of the year.
The Wolverine defense was tough to crack all day, and did not allow a CMU shot until the 84th minute. Senior Izzy Nino made her first start in goal since 2018, playing the full 90 and made one save. U-M had allowed only eight shots the past two matches, and own a 63-8 advantage in the category over that span.
