ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- An NCAA Regional at the U-M Golf Course and a season-opening home event in the fall highlight the University of Michigan women's golf team's slate of tournaments for the 2021-22 season, as announced today (Wednesday, Aug. 11) by coach Jan Dowling.
"Our goal as coaches when setting our tournaments is to compete against the best teams in the nation week in and week out, while also testing ourselves on great golf courses around the country," said Dowling. "This schedule certainly does both, and our team has earned the opportunity with great play over the past year. Our young women are excited and ready to put our best foot forward at every event."
With nine regular-season events, the Wolverines will start by hosting their first event at the U-M Golf Course in nine years with the Wolverine Invitational, Sept. 13-14, in what will be a preview of the spring NCAA postseason event. Michigan's home course will serve as one of four NCAA Regional host sites May 9-11, 2022.
"We have a very special opportunity to host on our home turf with the fall's Wolverine Invitational and then NCAA Regional in May," added Dowling. "We are excited to test ourselves on our home course while also competing against a great field this fall, as well as into postseason. We love our great Alister MacKenzie design and can't wait to showcase our historic facility to the nation's best teams."
The Maize and Blue will close its fall season with three October events. First, U-M heads to Northwestern's Windy City Classic, Oct. 4-5, for the third straight year. This year's event will be held at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill. The remaining schedule marks a fifth straight trip to North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Invitational, Oct. 15-17, at Finley Golf Course, as well as a fourth stop at UNC Wilmington's Landfall Tradition, Oct. 29-31.
Following two months of winter training and conditioning, the Wolverines will head to Naples, Fla., for a training weekend highlighted by a dual match vs. Florida Gulf Coast, Jan. 17, for a second straight year. Nearly a month later, the Wolverines will officially open their spring season by traveling south to Tulane's Allstate Sugar Bowl event at English Turn Golf Club, Feb, 13-15.
As with the fall, Michigan will close the spring regular season with several returns to familiar events. U-M will head back to Gainesville, Fla., for the Gator Invitational, March 5-6, in a return to the site of its last event before COVID-19 shut down the 2020 spring and then fall seasons. Michigan posted a third-place finish in the 2020 Gator Invitational, with three Wolverines finishing among the top 10.
The Maize and Blue will make a third straight trek to the College of Charleston's Briar Creek Invitational, March 14-15, as well as a return trip Arizona State's PING/ASU Invitational, March 25-27. ASU's event once again gives the Wolverines an opportunity to play a tournament at the host state of the NCAA Finals.. The regular season will close in Big Ten country at the Indiana Invitational, April 9-10.
After a five-year conference tournament run at TPC River's Bend in Mainesville, Ohio, the Big Ten Championships move to Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., to start postseason play April 22-24.
The Wolverines will host an NCAA regional for the first time in 15 years at the U-M Golf Course. Michigan is one of four regional sites, along with Florida State (Seminole Legacy), New Mexico (UNM Championship) and Oklahoma State (Karsten Creek). After advancing to the NCAA Finals in 2021, the Wolverines will be looking to make it back-to-back trips for the second time in program history. The 2022 event is slated for May 20-25 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
