Lau Named WGCA All-America Honorable Mention

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- University of Michigan women's golf junior Ashley Lau was named an All-America honorable mention by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) on Friday (May 28). She becomes just the second Wolverine in program history to earn WGCA recognition, joining Elodie Van Dievoet (2016-19), who earned second team honors in 2017.
"It's only fitting Ashley is recognized nationally with her WGCA All-America honor," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "She has firmly placed her mark on our program and record book with her consistent performance all year long. She led the way for us in half of our events, carried a record scoring record (72.64) and helped set the tone at home with her great work ethic and passion to contribute to our team's success. We are very proud of her, it's well deserved."
This past season, Lau helped to guide the Wolverines to top-five team finishes in all five of their regular-season events and six total. After tying for third and earning All-Tournament honors, she helped Michigan match the program's best finish at the Big Ten Championships, tying for second with a total of 858 (-6).
Earning the program's 14th NCAA regional bid, Lau, who tied for 25th (223) helped the Wolverines tie for fifth in Columbus and advance to the program's fourth trip to the NCAA Finals. In the finals, Lau tied for 53rd (223), helping the Maize and Blue to a 20th-place finish.
An All-Big Ten first team selection, Lau led the Wolverines with a 72.64 scoring average and a team-best nine sub-par rounds, including a career-best 68 (-4) twice in the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational and the final round of the Indiana Invitational.
One of four Wolverines to start all eight events, she finished as the top Wolverine in four events, all of which were top-10 finishes. Lau earned her first medalist honor at the Indiana Invitational with a 212 (-4) tally, helping her to her first Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolade. She has not missed a start in her career with 27 consecutive.
Lau finished the season holding the top three 54-hole tournament totals this season, including a career-low 211 (-5) at the Big Ten Championships, the second-lowest tally in program history.
Lau was one of four Big Ten women's golfers to be recognized along with Northwestern's Irene Kim (second team), Maryland's Virunpat Olankitkunchai (honorable mention) and Nebraska's Kate Smith (honorable mention).
