EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team posted its third straight shutout victory, taking down Michigan State, 7-0, on Friday (April 9) at MSU Tennis Center.
Nick Beaty gave Michigan (12-2, 12-1 Big Ten) its first singles victory with his 10th Big Ten win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Graydon Lair. Beaty won his fifth straight match and improved to 16-3 overall.
At No. 4 singles, Jacob Bickersteth remained unbeaten at 5-0, winning his third straight singles match 7-6, 6-1 over Luke Baylis.
With the best win percentage on the team, Patrick Maloney continued his success with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. It was his second straight match playing at the position, and he is now 2-0 there after starting the season 7-1 at No. 3.
Nino Ehrenschneider followed up, winning his second match at No. 6 singles 7-5, 6-3 and is now 2-0.
Mattias Siimar recorded matching 7-5 scores at No. 3 singles for his third straight victory. He is now 11-1 in Big Ten play.
Andrew Fenty kept the Wolverines perfect, winning the tiebreaker 10-6 after splitting 6-4 sets with Nick Williams at No. 1 singles.
The Wolverines got the day started outdoors with Ehrenschneider and Connor Johnston pairing up for the first time and taking the afternoon's first set 6-2 at No. 3 doubles. Beaty and Maloney followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. The duo is 3-0 against Big Ten opponents.
Michigan will wrap up its home-and-home series with Michigan State (5-10, 5-8 Big Ten) on Sunday (April 11) at noon, hosting the Spartans at the Varsity Tennis Center. A win over MSU and a loss by Ohio State would secure U-M at least a share of the Big Ten East Division title. The Wolverines also will honor their five seniors -- Harrison Brown, Connor Johnston, Teddy Oosterbaan, Kristofer Siimar and Mattias Siimar.
