The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (15-2) heads to the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 2 seed after sharing the Big Ten championship with Ohio State. Michigan will face either Purdue (6-10) or Illinois (8-8) in the first round, as U-M is in search of its third straight tourney title after winning in 2018 and 2019.
Wolverine Bites
• The Maize and Blue heads to the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 2 seed after sharing the Big Ten championship with Ohio State, compiling a 15-1 conference mark. U-M has captured nine of the last 11 Big Ten championships and now has 10 in program history (1997, 2010-15, 2017, 2019, 2021). OSU won the tiebreaker between the teams with a higher ITA ranking (No. 15), as the teams split their two meetings this season.
• The Wolverines have reached 15 straight championship matches at the Big Ten Tournament, dating back to the 2004-05 season. Michigan has won the last two tournaments contested, picking up a 4-3 win over Northwestern in the final match in 2018 and grabbing a 4-1 win over Illinois in 2019.
• U-M has won tournament titles in 1997, 2015, 2018 and 2019. The tournament was used to determine the Big Ten champion up until 2009, when the conference started using the regular season to determine the Big Ten champion.
• Michigan will face the winner of Purdue (6-10) and Illinois (8-8) on Friday (April 30) in the quarterfinal round at 9 a.m. CDT/10 a.m. EDT. U-M swept the season series from Purdue, while blanking Illinois (4-0) at the Varsity Tennis Center in the lone meeting this season between the two teams.
• Of Michigan's 10 Big Ten championships, nine of them have come since 2010. Head coach Ronni Bernstein has led the Wolverines to Big Ten championships in 2010-15, 2017, 2019 and 2021. Michigan's first Big Ten title was captured in 1997.
• U-M is 137-7 (.951) in Big Ten play under Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to nine of the last 11 Big Ten championship titles contested, as well as three tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• The ITA released two sets of rankings this week, one was computerized and the other a coaches poll. U-M came in at No. 19 in the computerized version and No. 14 in the coaches poll.
• In the latest individual rankings released by the ITA, freshmen Kari Miller (No. 48) and Gala Mesochoritou (No. 117) appear in the singles rankings, with Chiara Lommer and Jaedan Brown forming the No. 55-ranked doubles team.
• Graduate student Chiara Lommer became the 10th Wolverine in program history to reach 100 career wins, featuring a 104-45 record during her time at Michigan to rank eighth all-time. The lefty also is 13th historically at Michigan with a .698 singles winning percentage.
• During conference action, U-M outscored its opponents, 82-25, in 16 matches. Michigan had a pair of shutouts, blanking Rutgers (7-0) and Illinois (4-0). The Wolverines went 72-19 in singles play against Big Ten teams during the regular season, with Gala Mesochoritou and Jaedan Brown each leading the way with 14 wins apiece.
Last Time Out
The Wolverines took a 4-1 win over Michigan State to sweep the season series from the Spartans and clinch a share of the Big Ten championship with Ohio State. U-M rallied after dropping the doubles point, getting singles wins from Jaedan Brown, Kari Miller, Gala Mesochoritou and Bella Lorenzini.
