ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team recorded its first shutout of the season in a 16-0 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday morning (April 24) to advance to the CWPA Championship final at Canham Natatorium. U-M will face the winner of Bucknell and Saint Francis this evening at 7 p.m.
Michigan recorded its first shutout since blanking George Washington, 21-0, on April 1, 2017. U-M's trio of goalkeepers Heidi Ritner, Sophie Jackson and Alex Brown combined for the shutout, with Jackson and Brown each recording two saves.
Michigan scored five goals in each of the first two periods to grab a 10-0 lead at the half. Libby Alsemgeest, Erin Neustrom, Sofie Pontré and Anne Rankin accounted for Michigan's first-period goals, as Neustrom found the back of the cage just 16 seconds into the contest to stake Michigan to the lead.
It was much of the same in the second period as U-M tallied another five goals, these coming courtesy of Grace Harbaugh, Elise Walker (two), Kasey Umlauf and Sammi Monroe.
U-M switched goalkeepers in the third period, sending in Brown, who collected a pair of saves in the period. Michigan put another four goals in the cage in the third, as Neustrom collected a hat trick while Kathy Rogers, Neustrom and Emily Ritner rounded out the goal scorers.
Michigan once again made a switch in cage for the final period, with Jackson picking up a pair of saves to keep the shutout intact. Umlauf scored her second goal of the game in the final eight minutes, with Kayla Barone netting her first goal of the contest.
U-M will try for its fifth consecutive CWPA title later tonight at Canham.
