The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (14-2, 14-1 Big Ten) wraps up the regular season at home Sunday (April 18), hosting Michigan State (6-10, 6-9 Big Ten) at 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M can clinch its 10th Big Ten championship in program history, ninth under 14th-year head coach Ronni Bernstein, with a win over the Spartans. The match also marks Senior Day for the senior trio of Alyvia Jones, Chiara Lommer and Bella Lorenzini.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan enters the final weekend of the regular season in search of the 10th Big Ten championship in program history, needing a win over Michigan State to clinch it. U-M is tied atop the Big Ten standings with Ohio State at 14-1, with the Buckeyes hosting Penn State on Saturday (April 17).
• Of Michigan's nine Big Ten championships in program history, eight of them have come since 2010. Head coach Ronni Bernstein has led the Wolverines to Big Ten championships in 2010-15, 2017 and 2019. Michigan's first Big Ten title was captured in 1997. With a win this weekend, the women's tennis program will become the 17th program at Michigan to capture double-figure conference championships.
• Michigan will honor its senior class of Bella Lorenzini, Alyvia Jones and Chiara Lommer at Sunday's match as part of Senior Day.
• U-M is 136-7 (.951) in Big Ten play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to eight of the last 10 Big Ten championship titles, as well as three tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• The ITA released two sets of rankings this week, one computerized and the other a coaches poll. U-M came in at No. 20 in the computerized version and No. 12 in the coaches poll. In addition, Michigan moved into the top 10 of the USTA rankings at No. 9.
• Michigan State (6-10, 6-9 B1G) comes to the VTC on a two-match win streak after picking up wins against Illinois (4-3) and Indiana (5-2) last weekend. U-M recorded a 5-2 win against the Spartans earlier this season in East Lansing (March 21) and has won 20 straight against the Green and White.
• There were new singles and doubles rankings released this week, with Kari Miller (No. 46), Gala Mesochoritou (No. 120) and Jaedan Brown (No. 121) each garnering a singles ranking. On the doubles side, Brown teams up with Chiara Lommer to form the No. 54-ranked doubles team.
• Graduate student Chiara Lommer became the 10th Wolverine in program history to reach 100 career wins, featuring a 104-45 record during her time at Michigan to rank eighth all-time. The lefty also is 13th historically at Michigan with a .698 singles winning percentage.
• Michigan's freshman class, which was ranked as the No. 6 recruiting class, has delivered this season. Kari Miller, who is ranked No. 46 by the ITA, has played at the top two spots this year compiling a 10-4 dual-match record to go with a 13-4 overall record. Jaedan Brown comes in at No. 121 in singles and carries a 16-2 overall singles record and a 14-1 mark in dual matches. Gala Mesochoritou, ranked No. 119 in singles, is a perfect 16-0 in singles this season, with a 13-0 record in dual matches. Merri Kelly is 6-2 overall in singles, with a 3-2 record in dual matches after picking up a win against Purdue (April 3).
• During conference action, U-M has outscored its opponents, 78-24, in 15 matches. Michigan has a pair of shutouts, blanking Rutgers (7-0) and Illinois (4-0). The Wolverines are 68-19 in singles play against Big Ten teams so far this season, with Gala Mesochoritou and Jaedan Brown each leading the way with 13 wins apiece.
Last Time Out
The Wolverines took the season series from Northwestern, earning a 4-3 win against the No. 7-ranked Wildcats. U-M rallied after dropping the doubles point with singles wins from Kari Miller, Chiara Lommer, Jaedan Brown and Gala Mesochoritou.
