ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team's comeback effort against No. 9-ranked Ohio State came up just short as the Buckeyes won the final match on court to record the 4-3 win Sunday afternoon (March 28) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Much like the match in Columbus, all eyes were on the No. 1 singles match between No. 38 Kari Miller and Ohio State's No. 15-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers with the team match tied at 3-3. Miller took the first set, 6-4, before Cantos Siemers stormed back for a 6-2 second-set win.
In the third, Miller fell in an early hole and kept trying to climb out of it. She had a pair of break points down 4-3, but Cantos Siemers saved both to keep the break. Miller held in her next game, fighting off a match point on the deuce point to send Cantos Siemers back to the line to serve it out. The Buckeye double faulted to tie the game at 30-30 but won the final two points to seal the Ohio State win.
OSU won the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 after Michigan's top pair of freshman Jaedan Brown and graduate student Chiara Lommer grabbed a 6-2 win as the first match off court.
The teams split the first sets, with Michigan taking wins on the odd courts and Ohio State winning on the even courts.
Brown evened the team score at 1-1 with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Brown raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, serving it out on her second chance to get the early advantage. It was all Brown in the second set as she broke to start and never looked back.
The tie was short-lived as Ohio State got straight-set wins at No. 6 and No. 2 to grab a 3-1 lead.
Michigan went to work from there, getting a pair of three-set wins from freshman Gala Mesochoritou and sophomore Andrea Cerdan to extend the match.
Mesochoritou was down, 5-2, in the first set before ripping off three straight games to tie it up at 5-5. OSU's Kolie Allen won the next two games to grab the first set, but Mesochoritou answered by winning all six games in the second for a 6-0 win. Mesochoritou followed a similar script in the third set, falling in an early hole before rallying. At 5-2, Mesochoritou got the break she needed to ignite a run as she won the final five games to put Michigan's second point on the board.
Moments later, Cerdan wrapped up a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 to tie the match for Michigan. In the third and deciding set, Cerdan grabbed the early break at 3-2 but gave it right back on serve when her forehand found the net on the deuce point. She was not deterred, winning the next two games at love for a 5-3 lead. In the final game, she made good on her third match point to wrap up the three-set win to set up the final match at No. 1.
Michigan completes a three-match homestand next Saturday (April 3), hosting Purdue at 3 p.m.
