ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team got back on track with a 6-1 win over Purdue Saturday afternoon (April 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M won the doubles point and won five singles matches in the team victory.
U-M got off to a fast start in doubles play, taking early breaks on all three courts.
It was Michigan's top duo of graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Jaedan Brown who finished first, breezing to a 6-0 win at No. 1 in the first match off court.
After U-M staked a pair of 4-1 leads at the remaining two spots, Purdue got back on serve by winning two straight games at both spots.
U-M's No. 2 duo of freshman Kari Miller and sophomore Nicole Hammond quickly got back on track, getting the break back in the next game for a 5-3 lead. Miller headed back to the line to serve it out as the Wolverines won the game at love to seal up the doubles point.
It was all Michigan in singles action, as the home team won five first sets.
Freshman Merri Kelly accounted for Michigan's second point on the afternoon, grabbing a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. She took advantage of 2-0 starts in both sets, dropping just four total games to win her third dual match of the season.
Moments later, Miller extended Michigan's lead to 3-0 behind a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1. She used a break at 4-2 in the first set to ignite a run of three straight games for a 6-2 win. She followed a similar script in the second set, getting a timely break at 5-4 and serving it out in the next game for Michigan's third point of the day.
Lommer had the clinching honors, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3. The lefty won the first seven games of the match and was in control the whole way en route to getting the fourth point on the board.
Purdue got on the board a few minutes later with a win at No. 2 to cut the Michigan advantage to 4-1.
Freshman Gala Mesochoritou kept her perfect singles record intact with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5. With the first set staying on serve throughout, Mesochoritou got the break she needed on the deuce point at set point for a 6-4 win. She carried that momentum over into the second set, dropping just one game to get her 15th singles win of the season.
Brown wrapped up Michigan's day on a high note, getting a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 4 to provide the final margin. After breezing to a 6-1 first-set win, Brown found herself down 4-2 in the second. She clawed back on serve at 4-4 but she was broken in the next game. Brown then ripped off three straight games to get the win, coming through on the deuce point to fight off set point and tie it at 5-5. She won the final two games, breaking Seira Shimizu again in the final game.
Michigan is back on the road next weekend, traveling to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern on Sunday (April 11) at noon CDT.
