COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team stayed perfect in Big Ten action and ran its winning streak to 10 matches with a 5-2 win over Maryland on Sunday afternoon (March 14) at the Maryland Tennis Center.
Michigan struck first, grabbing the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2.
At No. 3, the Michigan duo of freshman Kari Miller and sophomore Nicole Hammond recovered from a quick 2-0 deficit to win six straight games and take a 6-2 win.
U-M wrapped up the match's first point when sophomore Andrea Cerdan and senior Alyvia Jones came away with a 6-3 win at No. 2. After staying on serve for most of the match, Jones and Cerdan got the break they needed to go up 5-3. U-M won the final game to put the match's first point on the scoreboard.
Freshman Jaedan Brown won her third straight match, getting a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 to account for Michigan's second point of the match.
Graduate student Chiara Lommer put U-M's third point up, winning the first eight games of her match in a 6-0, 6-2 win. The victory marked Lommer's 100th single win of her career, making her the 10th Wolverine in program history to reach triple digits.
Freshman Gala Mesochoritou clinched the Michigan win with her 11th straight singles victory, recording a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5. With the first set at 3-2, Mesochoritou did not lose a game the rest of the way, winning the final nine games to stay perfect on the season.
Maryland got on the board with two straight wins, coming at No. 1 and No. 6.
Cerdan accounted for Michigan's fifth and final point of the day, winning 7-6 (1), 4-6, 1-0 (4) at No. 3. Cerdan jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set before hanging on with a dominant performance in the tiebreaker. After dropping the second set, it was all Cerdan in the 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set with the team match already decided.
