IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in a shootout against Iowa in a non-conference slate Sunday afternoon (March 14) at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field.
It came down to the fifth and final shooter in the shootout as Michigan rallied from an early deficit and junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker made three straight stops. The Wolverines missed on their attempt, and Iowa's Sofie Stribos did not, getting Spieker down on the turf before roofing a shot into the open cage.
Spieker was outstanding in the contest, posting a season-high nine saves, including four off a barrage following an Iowa penalty corner in the first quarter.
Both teams scored their regulation goals late in the second quarter. Iowa struck first at the 25:38 mark, as Ellie Holley dribbled the ball in from the defensive 25 and hammered a hard shot from just inside the arc to the lower-left corner.
Michigan answered less than four minutes later, at 29:11, with junior Tina D'Anjolell's first goal of the season -- in her season debut -- on a shot from the left side of the circle. Senior Halle O'Neill rocketed the ball into the circle from beyond the Iowa 25, and sophomore Sarah Pyrtek got her stick on it to redirect it to the left side, where D'Anjolell spun and fired it into the lower-left corner of the cage. It was D'Anjolell's seventh career goal.
Iowa outshot the Wolverines, 17-7, and outcornered them, 6-2, but it was Michigan which largely controlled the two overtime periods.
The Wolverines (2-1) will return home for a two-game set against Northwestern next weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field. Michigan will host the Wildcats at 3 p.m. on Saturday (March 20) before wrapping the series at 3 p.m. on Monday (March 22).
