LAREDO, Texas -- Led by freshman Will Anderson's first career top-10 individual finish, the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a 302 final-round total to finished 12th with a 903 total Tuesday (Feb. 23) at Houston's Border Olympics held at the Laredo Country Club.
After opening with a career-low 71 (-1) paced by five birdies, Anderson repeated his five birdies in the second round to card an even-par 72, positioning himself among the top six in the 95-player field. With two more birdies in today's final round, he closed with a 73 (+1) to help him to an even-par 216 event total. His tally is the lowest by a freshman since current senior Henry Spring posted a 214 (+4) tally at the 2017 Big Ten Championships (April 27-29) at the Baltimore Country Club.
Anderson recorded the third best total for birdies with 12 and used his length to finish three-under on par-5 scoring as he tallied five birdies, three pars and two bogeys in his 12 opportunities.
After a career-best event last week, junior Patrick Sullivan followed Anderson as he tied for 49th with a 228 total. Beginning with tallies of 78 and 79 to open his event, Sullivan rebounded with 17 pars and a birdie in the final round to post the Wolverines lowest final-round score with a 71 (-1), giving him a 228 total. In fact, with his 17 pars over his final 18 holes, he closed with 40 total in 54 holes, which ranked second at the event.
Making his season debut, graduate senior Brent Ito used a 230 total (78-73-79) to tie for 57th, while senior Charlie Pilon finished a shot behind at 231 (77-75-79) to tie for 63rd.
The Wolverines will have less than a month to prep for their next tournament when U-M heads to Lafayette, La., for the Louisiana Classics, Monday and Tuesday, March 15-16. The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette will be played at the Oakbourne Country Club.
