LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team fell 80-62 to Arizona in the Roman Main Event championship game Sunday night (Nov. 21) at T-Mobile Arena.
Graduate student Eli Brooks led the Wolverines with 14 points, while also bringing down five rebounds and dishing out two assists. Sophomore Hunter Dickinson had 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Freshman Moussa Diabate came off the bench to grab five rebounds and added five points and one steal, while Caleb Houstan had six points and two steals
Michigan (3-2) and Arizona (5-0) exchanged baskets for the first 10 minutes before the Wolverines were put on a three minute scoring drought, allowing the Wildcats to go on a 7-0 run and take a 19-16 advantage with 8:40 remaining in the first half.
Michigan could not find an offensive rhythm against the Arizona defense, suffering a second scoring drought before Brooks drove the lane and laced a pass into Diabate for a big dunk with 1:41 remaining in the opening half. Brooks dropped a layup with two seconds left on the clock and sent U-M into the locker room trailing Arizona 37-29.
Brooks led Michigan with seven points in the first half and pulled down four rebounds and Dickinson had a team-best six rebounds.
The Wolverines cut the Arizona lead to six to start the second half on a pair of free throws from Dickinson and a jumper from Brooks, but the Wildcats quickly extended their lead back to double digits over the course of a minute and a half.
Arizona continued to push the pace of the game as Michigan was unable to put together a string of points and fell to the Wildcats.
The Wolverines return to Crisler Center on Wednesday (Nov. 24) for a 7 p.m. contest against Tarleton State, a game that will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
