DALLAS, Texas -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team wrapped up a first-place finish at the SMU Classic on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 9) at the Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center, topping the field with 336 points.
Much like Friday's (Oct. 8) first night of competition, Michigan started competition with a win in the relay, besting the field in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:24.91. Wyatt Davis, Will Chan, Gal Groumi and Cam Peel combined to give U-M the start it needed to control the meet.
Jake Mitchell hit the NCAA 'B' cut time and beat the field by nearly two seconds with a 4:17.94 in the 500-yard freestyle. Though Mitchell's win was the only other event victory on the day, the Wolverines won the SMU Classic by finishing in the top three in seven other events. Patrick Callan also earned points in the 500 free, winning the B Final in 4:19.70. The senior's time trailed only Mitchell's and also earned him a 'B' cut.
Freshman Groumi took second place in the 200-yard butterfly (1:43.01) and came in well under the NCAA 'B' time, while Chan finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.83) and also hit the NCAA 'B' cut.
Michigan had a strong showing in the 200-yard backstroke, as Davis touched the wall in 1:44.14 in the A Final and Bora Unalmis finished first in the B Final with a 1:44.15. Both times were good enough to best the NCAA B-cut standard.
Ross Todd picked up crucial points in the 1-meter dive, finishing with a zone-qualifying 304.30.
The Wolverines also took third in the 200-yard freestyle relay to secure the victory as Peel, Groumi, Mitchell and Chan completed the final race in 1:19.82.
Michigan will return to action on Friday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. when they take on Missouri and Purdue at the Boilermakers' November Triple Dual in West Lafayette, Ind.
