COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Senior Anca Craciun, junior Nicole Hammond and freshman Julia Fliegner each went 3-0 in singles as the University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up action at the Gamecock Shootout on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 31) at the Carolina Tennis Center.
Craciun did not drop a set in compiling her 3-0 singles record, knocking off Logan White (Butler), Kendall Couch (South Carolina) and Dani Schoenly (Ohio State) in straight sets to move her fall record to 7-3.
Fliegner continued her strong start to her first fall season, starting her weekend off with a three-set win over Ana Cruz of South Carolina. Over her next two matches, Fliegner dropped just five total games in a pair of straight-set wins to improve her singles record to 11-1.
Hammond dropped the first set she played on the weekend but rallied in the next two to take a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over South Carolina's Allie Gretkowski on Friday (Oct. 29). Hammond yielded just one game to Butler's Delaney Schurhamer in a 6-1, 6-0 win before wrapping up the weekend with a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (8) win over Nicole Petchey from SMU.
Sophomore Merri Kelly won her first match of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Norah Balthazor before dropping her final two.
On the doubles court, Craciun and Kelly combined for a 2-1 record, with Hammond and Fliegner going 1-2.
U-M will wrap up the fall season next weekend, with Kari Miller representing Michigan at the ITA Fall National Championships (Nov. 4-7) and the rest of the team in action at the ASU Thunderbird (Nov. 5-7).
