ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Julia Fliegner of the University of Michigan women's tennis team went 4-0 in singles action over the weekend as the three-day Wolverine Invitational came to a close Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Fliegner capped her perfect weekend on the singles court with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Notre Dame's Page Coleman on Sunday afternoon. Fliegner fell in an early 2-0 hole in the first set before battling to get back on serve. She was once again down a break with Coleman back to serve for the first set at 5-4. Fliegner got the break she needed, igniting a run of three straight games to take the first set.
The Wolverine freshman jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set and never looked back, getting the 6-3 win to move her singles record on the season to 6-0.
Sophomore Jaedan Brown picked up her second singles win of the event, getting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Notre Dame's Julia Lilien. It was all Brown in the first set as she won the first five games en route to the win. She got a break midway through the second set and that was all the space she needed to record the win.
Junior Nicole Hammond accounted for Michigan's final singles win of the event, rallying for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Cali Jankowski of Arizona State. Hammond quickly recovered from dropping the first set, breezing to a 6-2 win in the second. She once again broke early in the third set before holding on a deuce point with a serve out wide to keep the break at 4-2. She won two of the remaining three games to hand Jankowski her first singles loss of the event.
Michigan split its two doubles matches against Western Michigan, with Fliegner and sophomore Merri Kelly teaming up for a 6-2 win.
Michigan's fall season continues Monday (Oct. 4) as sophomore Kari Miller is in action in singles qualifying at the ITA All-American in Charleston, S.C. Miller will face Margarita Skriabina of Texas Tech at 9 a.m.
