BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The 17th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team played to a 0-0 overtime draw against Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 3) at Armstrong Stadium. In the first minute of OT, a lightning delay halted play for nearly 20 minutes, and the match was called due to unplayable field conditions.
In the opening half, U-M was outshot for the second time in a half on the season, with Indiana (8-2-3, 2-1-2 Big Ten) taking nine attempts to six for Michigan (8-1-3, 2-0-2 Big Ten). However, U-M led the shots-on-goal column with a 4-3 advantage.
U-M's best sequence came in the 33rd minute, as sophomore Sarah Bridenstine sent in a service off a corner from the near side. Senior Sydney Shepherd had a shot on the back post that was saved, and the rebound was spilled to Bridenstine, who followed with the second shot that also was stopped by Hoosier goalie Jamie Gertsenberg.
Senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall had a season-best six saves in the match for her third solo clean sheet of the season. The Hoosiers held a 16-11 shots advantage over U-M, marking the first time U-M has been outshot in a match this season.
In the midst of a four-match road swing, U-M will next travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face No. 9 Rutgers on Wednesday (Oct. 6) at 1 p.m. in a battle of Big Ten unbeatens. The Scarlet Knights will carry a 4-0 conference record and 9-2 overall mark into the match, which is a makeup of the postponed Sept. 23 contest between the teams.
