ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed the first day of action at the Wolverine Invitational Friday afternoon (Oct. 1) at the Varsity Tennis Center, winning five doubles matches and four singles matches.
The Wolverines were strong on the doubles court, going 5-1 over two rounds of doubles matches. Sophomore Jaedan Brown and junior Andrea Cerdan combined to go 2-0, with the duo of junior Nicole Hammond and freshman Julia Fliegner also finishing with a 2-0 record on the afternoon. Both pairs got wins over South Carolina and Ohio State teams.
In singles action, Michigan faced off against both Western Michigan and Arizona State.
U-M swept its three matches against Western Michigan, getting a pair of straight-set wins from senior Anca Craciun and sophomore Merri Kelly. Craciun breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kiana Rizzolo, while Kelly picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win against Ana Guadina. Kelly was down a break midway through the first set before ripping off three straight games. She got an early break in the second set to win her third singles match of the fall.
Fliegner remained perfect in tournament action after rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over WMU's Lindsey Zieglar. After getting the split with a win in the second set, Fliegner won the first three games in the third to take control en route to the victory.
Cerdan capped the afternoon with a three-set win over Arizona State's Marianna Argyrokastriti, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. Cerdan went up a break at 5-3 following a medical timeout for Argyrokastriti but was unable to close out the match in the next service game to put the set back on serve. Cerdan broke Argyrokastriti again, this time to seal the match with a 6-4 third-set win.
Michigan continues action at the Wolverine Invitational Saturday (Oct. 2) at 10 a.m. There will be two rounds of singles played tomorrow, the first at 10 a.m. and the second at 2 p.m.Â
