Team Notes
• Michigan will be participating in its first team competition at Canham Natatorium in 357 days. Their last meet was a dual against Michigan State on Jan. 31, 2020.
• This will be the last scheduled meeting between Michigan and Michigan State. Back in the fall, Michigan State made the decision to cut men's and women's swimming and diving.
• The Wolverines opened the season last Saturday (Jan. 16) with a double-dual meet against Indiana and Northwestern in Bloomington, Ind. The women's team won both decisions for a clean sweep, while the men's team went 1-1. [ Recap ]
• To date, U-M swimmers have achieved 30 NCAA 'B' cuts -- 17 for the men, 13 for the women.
• Junior Olivia Carter is off to a fantastic start to the season, winning three events (plus swimming anchor on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay) in last Saturday's meet. She was named Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday (Jan. 20).
• On the men's side, breaststroke continues to be an area of strength. Against Indiana and Northwestern, juniors Will Chan (100-yard breaststroke) and AJ Bornstein (200-yard breaststroke) each clocked victories. In the fall, another junior, Mason Hunter, went 51.80, a time that ranks fifth-best in the NCAA this season.
• One area of depth for the women's team appears to be in backstroke. Against Indiana and Northwestern, U-M went 1-2-4 in the 100-yard backstroke and 1-2-3 in the 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Casey Chung and sophomore Mariella Venter alternated victories in both events.
• The following freshmen made their dual-meet debuts against Indiana and Northwestern: Juan Ceresa, Casey Chung, Wyatt Davis, Claire Donan, Kalli Fama, Sophie Housey, Noelle Kaufmann, James LeBuke, Jake Mitchell, Charlie Morici, Claire Newman, Taylor Peters, Bence Szabados, Yugo Tsukikawa, Sophia Tuinman and Claire Tuttle.
• Last Saturday's meet also was the first opportunity for the Michigan divers to compete for NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores. Three divers surpassed the required marks and qualified: seniors Ross Todd (1M, 3M), Chris Canning (3M) and Christy Cutshaw (1M).
