AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Michigan student-athletes Tommy Cope (men's swimming and diving), Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort (field hockey), Annika Hoffmann (rowing) and Strauss Mann (ice hockey) were named to the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Men's and Women's At-Large teams, announced Friday (June 19) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Cope, Fernandez Lacort and Hoffman were all named to the second team, while Mann placed on the third team.
The at-large teams for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® program include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as beach volleyball, bowling, field hockey and rowing for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.
Cope, Fernandez Lacort, Hoffman and Mann give Michigan a total of five Academic All-Americans for the 2019-20 year (including Joel Harrison of men's soccer) and 142 Academic All-Americans in its history. The last time U-M had four Academic All-American At-Large selections was 2015 (Richard Funk, Justin Glanda, Sammy Gray, Zach Hyman).
Cope (Dayton, Ohio) was a two-time Big Ten champion in 2020, winning the 200-yard breaststroke and swimming a leg on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay. He had individually qualified for the NCAA Championships and became a three-time CSCAA All-American after the meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was the University of Michigan's male recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor and also was a recipient of a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship. Cope graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and plans to return in the fall to pursue a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering. He is the seventh U-M men's swimmer to earn Academic All-America honors.
Fernandez Lacort (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was named Michigan's female recipient of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor last week, becoming just the second field hockey honoree in school history. She was voted the 2019 Big Ten Athlete of the Year and named an NFHCA first team All-American after posting three goals, a team-best 12 assists and 18 points while serving as U-M's field general in the midfield. An economics major, she was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten and three-time NFHCA Academic Squad honoree. She is the third member of the field hockey program to earn Academic All-America honors.
Hoffmann (Geelong, Australia) has been a varsity eight contributor for Michigan rowing since she stepped onto campus in the fall of 2017. She has won two Big Ten medals including one gold, and has rowed in boats that finished top-five in the NCAA twice (2V8, 4th, 2018; 1V8, 3rd, 2019). Hoffmann was part of two podium finishes at the NCAA Championships (third place -- 2017, 2019) and a Big Ten Title-winning team last spring. She boasts a 4.0 grade-point average studying Political Science and Comparative Literature and was named rowing's Elite 90 winner at the 2019 NCAA Championships. She speaks three languages (German, French), and has been Academic All-Big Ten, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and a CRCA All-Academic honoree. She is the first member of the rowing program to earn Academic All-America honors.
The Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, Mann (Greenwich, Conn.) also was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the nation's top goaltender. A finalist for the league Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten selection, Mann's postseason accolades also include the Hal Downes Award as the team MVP. This season, Mann was third in the nation in save percentage at .939 and sixth in goals-against average at 1.85. With six shutouts, he tied the Michigan single-season record and holds the single-season program marks for save percentage and goals-against average. During the season, Mann was named a Big Ten Star of the Week four times. He is the third member of the ice hockey program to earn Academic All-America honors.
