ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its winter 2020 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Monday (May 11), with 87 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of the 87Â Michigan student-athletes on the list is five from men's basketball, five from women's basketball, 11 from men's gymnastics, eight from women's gymnastics, 12 from ice hockey, 21 from men's swimming and diving, 18 from women's swimming and diving and seven from wrestling.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the fall and spring seasons. U-M had 118 honorees in the fall to give the Wolverines 205Â for the year.
Student-athletes with a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school, are eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award announced this summer.
