PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team recorded eight total placewinners, including four in the top five at their respective weights, to place seventh (73Â points) on the second and final day at the 2020 Big Ten Championships on Sunday (March 8) at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
Sophomore Mason Parris was the Wolverines' top finisher with a runner-up finish at heavyweight, dropping an 8-6 decision to Minnesota's top-ranked Gable Steveson in the first match between the two. Steveson scored on three takedowns, including two in the first period before icing it with an ankle in the third. Parris cut the final deficit with a single leg in the waning moments of the third. It was his first loss of the season.
Junior/sophomore Jack Medley split a pair of overtime matches to claim fourth place at 125 pounds in his Big Ten Championships debut. Medley dropped his medal match, 3-2, in the second tiebreaker to Northwestern's Michael DeAugustino, who used a pair of rideouts -- though giving up a stall point in the first tiebreaker -- to make the difference. Medley used a tiebreaker rideout of his own to edge Nebraska's Alex Thomsen, 2-1, in his consolation semifinal.
Senior/junior Kanen Storr claimed fifth place at 149 pounds with a late comeback to defeat Purdue's Griffin Parriott, 5-3, in overtime in his medal match. Down by two, Storr shot in on a double leg off a restart with just 10 seconds remaining in the third and earned the takedown with four seconds remaining to force overtime, where he came out on top of an extended scramble to seal the comeback win. Storr dropped an 8-3 decision to Nebraska's Collin Purinton in the consolation semifinals on a pair of third-period takedowns.
Sophomore/freshman Will Lewan also claimed fifth place at 157 pounds and picked up bonus points with a win by medical forfeit in his medal match. Lewan dropped a 4-1 decision to Illinois' Eric Barone in his consolation semifinal, giving up a single-leg takedown on the edge and riding time late in the third period.
The Wolverines went 1-2 in their seventh-place matches to round out the placewinners. Fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow cruised to a 9-2 decision against Minnesota's Hunter Ritter at 197 pounds-- his second win over the Golden Gopher this season -- with two takedowns, a four-point leg turk and 2:05 in riding-time advantage. Sophomore/freshman Joey Silva dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Nebraska's 11th-ranked Ridge Lovett on a last-second takedown at 133 pounds, while senior Tyler Meisinger similarly sacrificed a third-period lead in a 6-2 loss to Michigan State's Drew Hughes.
The Wolverines will take a two-week break to prepare for the NCAA Championships, scheduled for March 19-21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Michigan will send at least six wrestlers to the national event and have an opportunity to add more when NCAA at-large selections are unveiled on Tuesday (March 10). NCAA seeds and full brackets will be announced on Wednesday (March 11).
