CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team split a tri-meet with No. 6 Illinois and No. 8 Penn State on Saturday (Feb. 7) at Illinois' Huff Hall. With the result, U-M now sits at 3-1 in its quest to repeat as Big Ten regular-season champions.
Michigan (11-1, 3-1 Big Ten) began the afternoon on still rings, scoring a 68.000, and was led by junior Cameron Bock, who marked a 14.50 for a second-place finish. After the first rotation, U-M sat in second by a two-point margin.
In the second rotation, U-M scored a 70.350 on floor exercise, where freshman Paul Juda scored a 15.00 -- the third-highest mark in the NCAA -- and earned the event title. Junior Nick Guy scored a 14.40 and classmate Jacob Moore contributed a 14.25. U-M led by .900 points over Illinois heading into pommel horse.
Following a subpar 65.650 on pommel horse, U-M took to high bar, where Bock once again led the way with a 14.20 to register an event win. U-M scored a season-low 65.650 to trail by nearly five points going into the final rotation, parallel bars.
On bars, Bock paced the Maize and Blue with a 14.10 and both Juda and Moore tied for second on the event with a 14.00. U-M scored a 67.20 to inch U-M closer to the Illini, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Juda's floor title was his third of the season, and the vault win was his second. Bock's win on parallel bars was the eighth of his career, and the high bar win was his second.
