INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half before using a 24-10 advantage in the third quarter to take the lead for good, recording an 81-75 win over Nebraska on Thursday (March 5) in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Michigan's sophomore duo of Naz Hillmon and Amy Dilk each recorded 20-point games as Hillmon went for 20 points and seven boards, with Dilk scoring 22 points with six assists. Junior Hailey Brown chipped in 13 points and freshman Izabel Varejão went for 12 off the bench. Freshman Maddie Nolan had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals in nearly 39 minutes in her return to her home state.
Michigan came out of the gates strong, scoring the first four points en route to an 8-3 lead at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter.
The Huskers answered by scoring 17 of the next 22 points, taking advantage of Hillmon picking up two early fouls, to grab a 20-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Nebraska scored five straight points, forcing a Michigan timeout as the Husker lead hit double figures, 25-14, with 9:12 left in the second quarter.
Nebraska led by as many as 14 in the second quarter before Michigan made a late run to get within eight, 42-34, at the half on a Dilk layup to end the half.
Michigan scored the first six points of the third quarter, holding Nebraska off the board for the first three minutes of the period to get back within two, 42-40. The teams exchanged baskets before Michigan tied the game at 44 with 6:12 left in the quarter on a putback from senior Akienreh Johnson.
Nolan hit Michigan's first triple of the game at the top of the key to push Michigan back in front for the first time since the early going, 47-44, with 5:36 to go in the quarter.
Michigan never trailed the rest of the period, holding Nebraska to 10 points in the third quarter for a 58-52 lead after 30 minutes.
The teams went back-and-forth over the early part of the fourth quarter until Brown canned a triple to give Michigan a 10-point lead, 69-59, with 6:51 remaining. Johnson followed with a putback as Michigan's lead grew to 12, 71-59, at the 5:54 mark.
The U-M lead never dipped below six the rest of the way as the Wolverines got their 20th win of the season to advance to the quarterfinals.
Michigan will face No. 2 seed Northwestern on Friday (March 6) at 6:30 p.m.
