ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris used a second-period leg turk to pin No. 3 Tony Cassioppi and highlight the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's home finale on Saturday night (Feb. 8). The Wolverines fell to No. 1 Iowa, 27-9, in front of 4,009 fans at Crisler Center, as the Hawkeyes clinched at least a share of the Big Ten Conference dual-meet title.
It was the fifth pin for Parris in Big Ten dual competition this season, ninth overall and second in as many duals. The Wolverine captain, ranked No. 2 nationally, struck quickly in the bout, scoring off his dump just 15 seconds into the bout and, after getting reversed while attempting an arm bar, spun out of an Iowa single-leg shot to tack on another takedown late in the first. He countered another Cassioppi single in the second, using an ankle pick and his hips to score the takedown and immediately transition to a leg turk to put the Hawkeye on his back. After a couple adjustments, Parris secured the fall at 4:41. He improved to 23-0 on the season.
Sophomore/freshman Joey Silva earned Michigan's other match win, building an early lead en route to a 7-5 decision over Paul Glynn at 133 pounds. He scored on an ankle pick in the first period, added a counter takedown in the second and accumulated 1:19 in riding-time advantage. Glynn scored on a takedown of his own to narrow the final score, but Silva hung on to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Michigan had additional opportunities for victories, notably dropping one-point decisions at 149 and 184 pounds. Senior/junior Kanen Storr, lost, 2-1, to second-ranked Pat Lugo on a third-period rideout in the former bout, while junior/sophomore Jelani Embree, despite pushing the pace late and drawing a stall warning on the edge, fell to Cash Wilcke, 3-2, at 184 pounds.
Junior/sophomore Jack Medley, ranked 19th at 125 pounds, also wrestled tough in the dual's opening, dropping an 8-1 decision to top-ranked and two-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee. The Hawkeye scored on a takedown and two-point turn in the first and added another takedown in the second but did not secure bonus points for the first time this season.
The Wolverines will wrap their Big Ten dual slate on the road next weekend. U-M will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to face the Cornhuskers at 8 p.m. CST on Friday (Feb. 14) before closing out the weekend with a 3 p.m. CST slate against Wisconsin on Sunday (Feb. 16) in Madison. Both duals will air live on the Big Ten Network.
