CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Junior left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan softball team past No. 25 North Carolina, 4-0, in ACC/Big Ten Challenge play on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) at the Tar Heels' Anderson Stadium.
Beaubien (4-0) went the distance in the circle, striking out nine while allowing seven total baserunners -- and just three in scoring position -- on three hits and three walks. It was the Wolverines' second shutout of the season and first complete-game effort.
Freshman second basemen Julia Jimenez paced Michigan at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI doubles. Sophomore catcher Hannah Carson also posted a multi-hit game with a pair of singles, while senior right fielder Thais Gonzalez drove in a run in the fourth.
Michigan built its lead with single runs in four straight frames through the second to the fifth. Sophomore designated player Morgan Overaitis took advantage of a UNC miscue to score the first and game-winning run, reaching on a leadoff single, advancing to third on a pair of infield grounders before scoring on a wild pitch to the backstop.
Jimenez posted her RBI doubles in the third and fifth innings, scoring sophomore left fielder Lexie Blair both times, while Gonzalez used an RBI single to right field to score freshman pinch-runner Audrey LeClair.
Michigan (8-0) will wrap up play at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday (Feb. 16), taking on Louisville at 10 a.m. at Anderson Stadium. The Wolverines defeated the Cardinals, 6-2, in their weekend opener Friday (Feb. 14).
