Brooks, Livers Lead Michigan to Dominant Win Over Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Juniors Eli Brooks and Isaiah Livers combined for 35 points to lead the University of Michigan men's basketball team to a 79-54 victory over Northwestern on Wednesday night (Feb. 12) at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Brooks started the offense for the Wolverines making three of his four three-pointers in the first half and scoring a team-best 18 points, while Livers added 17 points -- including two big dunks in the second half and going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Off the bench, senior Austin Davis played a big role with nine points, and David DeJulius scored seven points. The Wolverines played 11 players, all of whom scored at least one point.
U-M dished out 21 assists, with DeJulius handing out a team-high seven helpers, while Zavier Simpson had five and Franz Wagner had four. Michigan forced 10 Northwestern turnovers and turned them into 13 points.
Senior Jon Teske pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, and Brooks, Livers and Wagner all grabbed five boards. Michigan dominated on the boards, outrebounding Northwestern, 45-32, with nine offensive boards compared to NU's five.
Following a slow start, Brooks hit back-to-back triples before Michigan went on a 10-0 run to take its first lead, 16-13, with 11:00 remaining in the first half and led to a Northwestern timeout.
The Wolverines closed out the half on a 15-5 run, including making five of its final seven shots, while keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard for more than five minutes at the end of the half.
With two big runs, U-M took a 38-23 lead into the locker room behind nine points each from Brooks and Livers and seven points from Davis. Michigan outrebounded Northwestern, 23-14, in the first half and the bench contibuted 15 points.
Michigan came out of the break to put together its third double-digit run of the game, while the defense forced three turnovers to help the Wolverines take a 48-25 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the contest.
Michigan increased its lead to 23 on a dunk from Livers with 13:14 remaining to put U-M up, 52-29. The Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to cut the Wolverine lead to 13 points, 58-45, before Michigan called its first timeout with 7:35 left to play.
U-M ended the Northwestern comeback with a three-pointer from Brooks and four straight points from Livers to bring the Michigan advantage back to 17 wtih just over five minutes remaining.
Michigan will return to Crisler Center to take on Indiana on Sunday (Feb. 16). Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on CBS.
