ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's and women's swimming and diving teams ended another week of training with another intrasquad-style competition on Saturday (Nov. 7) at Canham Natatorium. Many of the swimmers were swimming "off" events, typically considered ones outside of their strengths, though there were some notable performances:
• Junior Maggie MacNeil went 51.10 in the 100-yard backstroke, going under the Canham Natatorium record of 51.52, set by Indiana's Kate Zubkova in 2009.
• Senior Luiz Gustavo Borges looked sharp on the relays, splitting 19.30 on the anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay and 42.88 on the anchor leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Cam Peel also looked solid (19.50/43.55).
• Freshman Casey Chung got two cracks at the 100-yard backstroke. After going 53.04 on her first attempt, she went 52.87 on the second, unofficially becoming the seventh-best performer in that event in program history. That time would have made the 'A' final at last year's Big Ten Championships (eighth was 53.17).
• Junior Mason Hunter threw down a great in-season time in the 100-yard breaststroke, going 52.73. That is only .04 seconds off his personal best (52.69 from the 2020 Big Ten Championships). It is also more than a half-second faster than his time in the team's last intrasquad three weeks ago (53.27).
• Others with substantial improvements over October's intrasquad were the distance tandem of senior Sierra Schmidt and sophomore Kaitlynn Sims. On Saturday, Sims went 4:48.93/9:51.18 in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles, down from her times of 4:49.09/9:54.57 in October. For Schmidt, she was 4:51.28/9:53.85, also down from October (4:52.97/10:07.94).
• Other members of the team's freshman class continued to shine. On the men's side, three rookies had team-best times: Wyatt Davis in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.55) and 100-yard butterfly (48.22), Bence Szabados in the 100-yard freestyle (44.67) and Jake Mitchell in the 200-yard backstroke (1:46.87).
Other standout performers on the women's side included Kathryn Ackerman and Sophie Housey. They went 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, both eclipsing 1:48.00 (1:47.68/1:47.97), and then went 1-2 in the 200-yard IM (1:59.50/2:01.11). Both women were faster on Saturday than they were in October.
In the diving well, each diver had the opportunity to dive on one event of their choosing. The scores were as follows:
