ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior point guard Zavier Simpson scored 10 of his team-high 22 points after the end of regulation, and with an enthusiastic Crisler Center behind it, the University of Michigan men's basketball team rallied to an 84-78 double-overtime victory over Purdue on Thursday night (Jan. 9).
The double-overtime contest was Michigan's first since March 3, 2015, when the Wolverines fell to Northwestern on the road. U-M's last double-overtime victory came March 20, 2006, when Michigan earned an 87-84 victory over Notre Dame to advance to the NIT final.
U-M used a nearly flawless final 30 minutes of play, committing just one turnover and outscoring the Boilermakers, 16-10, over the two overtime periods. Simpson's 22-point performance was his third career 20-point game. He also dished out a team-best nine assists, finishing one shy of the double-double.
Senior Jon Teske finished with 18 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds, blocking four shots and adding two steals, and freshman Franz Wagner scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Sophomore David DeJulius provided a spark off the bench, scoring, 11 points and handing out a career-best six assists in 31 minutes.
The Wolverines scored 40 points in the paint, while 17 of their 31 field goals came via assists. Defensively, the Wolverines caused 15 turnovers, totaling seven steals and seven blocks.
Trailing, 62-60, with 27 seconds left in regulation, a layup by Simpson knotted the game at 62 with 19 seconds on the clock. On Purdue's ensuing possessions, a block by Wagner on Trevion Williams' layup attempt as time expired sent the game into overtime.
Simpson scored at will to open overtime, driving for a layup and sinking a free throw to give U-M a 65-62 lead a minute into the extra period. In need of points after a 68-66 Boilermakers lead, Simpson drove strong for a layup to tie the game at 68 with 44 seconds remaining. Solid defense stopped Purdue from scoring late and the game headed to a second overtime period.
In the second overtime, an and-one from Teske followed by a three-pointer from Simpson quickly gave Michigan a six-point advantage, 74-68. Following a Michigan timeout, a drive and kick from DeJulius led to a Wagner three-pointer that increased the U-M lead to 77-68.
After Purdue scored four unanswered points, a mid-range jumper from DeJulius ended the Boilermaker spurt and increased Michigan's lead to 79-72 with a minute to play. The Wolverines closed out the game with late free throws from Simpson and DeJulius.
The Wolverines started slow offensively in the first half, shooting just 30 percent from the field and committing four turnovers through the first six minutes of play. Defense kept Michigan in the game, as it scored seven points off five Purdue miscues to take a 13-12 lead before the second media timeout.
U-M maintained strong defensive play to help increase its lead to 23-21 with four minutes to play in the first half. A three-pointer from Brandon Johns Jr. and a layup from Simpson were the final points scored in the half, and the Wolverines held a 32-28 advantage at the halftime break.
Michigan scored 13 points off 11 Purdue turnovers in the first half. Teske scored eight points, while Simpson dished out six assists and scored four points in the first 20 minutes.
A slow start to the second half led to Purdue grabbing a 36-34 lead before the first media timeout. Michigan and Purdue exchanged points following the timeout, and the Boilermakers held a 45-43 lead with 11 minutes left to play.
A pair of made free throws increased the Purdue lead to five, but a deep three-pointer from Wagner and a layup from Simpson tied the game at 49 with eight minutes remaining. The Boilermakers took advantage of a three-minute U-M scoring drought and pushed the lead to 53-49 with just five minutes to play in the second half.
After an offensive rebound and second-chance basket from Teske, his mid-range jumper tied the game at 53 before a Purdue timeout. Two made free throws from Teske gave U-M a 55-53 advantage as the clock showed four minutes remaining.
After exchanging points, a deep three-pointer from Purdue gave the Boilermakers a 60-58 lead. With under one minute to play, a strong drive and finish from Simpson tied the game at 60 before a Purdue timeout with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation set up the final second-half sequence to force OT.
Michigan will be back in action Sunday (Jan. 12) when it travels to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a Big Ten matchup against the Golden Gophers. Tipoff is scheduled for noon CST, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
