ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team posted strong results on the first day of the Power Five Invitational on Friday (Jan. 31), competing among some of the sport's biggest stars.
Chloe Foster and Julia Hall posted a one-two finish at 600 meters with personal-record, historic performances while sprinters Jeryne Fish and Madison Eaton qualified to compete on Saturday alongside the likes of nine-time Olympic medalist Allyson Felix and Olympians Cindy Ofili, Tiffany Porter and Deajah Stevens.
Foster jumped into the top-five nationally with a career-best 1:30.10 to win the 600-meter competition, beating out teammate Hall's 1:30.92 for the victory. Foster bolstered her standing at No. 6 on the all-time school list, which Hall entered at No. 10 with her effort.
Fish had a career-best day in the 60 meters, clocking 7.63 in the qualifying round and 7.65 in the preliminaries -- both far superior to her previous best of 8.09. The latter performance was fast enough for eighth-best in the prelims, advancing her to Saturday's 12:10 p.m. final.
There she will race against Felix, the most decorated female track and field athlete in Olympic history, and 2016 Olympian Stevens. Felix, who took to the track with great enthusiasm from the crowd, clocked a 7.45 to finish with the third-fastest time of the day.
Eaton ran a lifetime-best 8.61 for the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles qualifying round before going 8.78 in the prelims to advance with the eighth-and-last berth into the noon final.
She took fourth in her prelims heat to top seed and 2016 Olympian Ofili. The U-M alumna clocked 8.13 for not just the top time of the day, but the fastest time ever run in the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Ofili was followed by sister and fellow 2016 Olympian Porter, who clocked 8.28 for the second-best time of the day.
In the only other final of the day featuring a Michigan competitor, Theresa Mayanja finished fifth in the pentathlon with a score of 3,530, a new personal record by more than 100 points. She got it done with new PRs in the 60-meter hurdles (8.82), high jump (1.61m / 5-3.5) and 800 meters (2:30.61).
The second-and-final day of the Power Five Invitational will kick off Saturday (Feb. 1) at 11 a.m. with field events, followed by the main track program at noon.
