Team Notes
• The Wolverines are in a stretch of three meets in four weeks as they begin preparations for the Big Ten Championships. After last Saturday's victory over Indiana, this weekend's meet against Ohio State is another opportunity for Michigan to see where it stands against another contender for the conference championship. Since 2008, the Big Ten championship has been won by either Michigan, Indiana or Ohio State. Additionally, the three teams have occupied the top three spots in the standings at every Big Ten Championship meet since 2011.
• Michigan handed Indiana its first dual-meet loss in Big Ten competition in four years last Saturday (Jan. 11), toppling the Hoosiers, 160-140, at Canham Natatorium. [ Recap ]
• Michigan moved up two spots to No. 3 in the latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 rankings, released Dec. 11. [ Rankings ]
• Senior Tommy Cope was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday (Jan. 15) for his efforts in the team's 160-140 win over Indiana. Cope touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke (53.28), 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.34) and 200-yard IM (1:45.61), earning NCAA 'B' cuts in all three swims. Cope also swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:25.44).
• Four swimmers have Big Ten-best times at this point in the season, including junior Luiz Gustavo Borges (50-yard freestyle), sophomore Patrick Callan (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), senior Felix Auböck (1,000-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle) and Cope (200-yard IM, 400-yard IM). Additionally, U-M has conference-best times in three relays (800-yard freestyle relay, 200- and 400-yard medley relays).
• Four of the team's five divers have achieved at least one NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score. Junior Ross Todd, senior Jake Herremans and junior Chris Canning have marks in all three events, while freshman Kevin Bradley has met the score on one-meter.
Opponent Preview
OHIO STATE is 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in Big Ten action, defeating Penn State, 193.5-158.5, on Nov. 2 in State College, Pennsylvania. The Buckeyes are coming off a 175.5-142.5 victory over Kentucky on Jan. 3-4 in Columbus. Last year, Ohio State was third at the Big Ten Championships and ninth at the NCAA Championships. Cameron Craig, a junior transfer from Arizona State, leads the Buckeyes with team-best times in four events, and was an All-American in the 200-yard freestyle in 2017. Other student-athletes to watch include Paul Delakis, an All-American in both the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke in 2019; Noah Lense, a two-time All-Big Ten (second team) selection; and diver Jacob Fielding, an All-America (Honorable Mention) on platform in 2019.
